Taiko is a multimillion-dollar landfill built on a “perfect site” in a way New Zealand has never seen before. Early investigations found other possible sites were inappropriately located next to rivers, too close to the coastline, or in old quarries that were gravel run with poor geology.
Get a rundown of the consenting process associated with the development, along with the stakeholder engagement and the more technical side of how the dump site treats the contaminants to protect the environment. There will also be some chat about the construction process and what went smoothly and what didn’t.
The event will start at 3.00PM at the main building and will likely go for an hour with half an hour later for questions and networking.
No PPE is required. The site will be visible from the main building located on-site.
THE SITE
The site is a historic limestone quarry turned into a meticulously managed fill site. Unlike a conventional landfill that accepts various types of waste, this facility strictly prohibits organic and household waste. It will provide a safe and secure disposal solution for contaminated land and commercial waste for many decades.
“It is the perfect site because it has fantastic geology, fantastic hydro geology, it has iwi support, it’s got community support, it’s well located and it ticks all those fundamental boxes.”
The innovative approach of the proposed managed fill will restore the quarry to its original shape, effectively erasing the current scar on the hillside. The site has restored and protected some local and culturally significant rock art. It has also restored and protected an adjacent wetland, ensuring its long-term well-being and ecological vitality for generations to come.
