Learners will explore key goal-setting terms, translate strategies into actionable goals, balance ambition with realism and apply the SMART (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant and Time-Bound) framework. Practical tools and measures for generic and specific applications, including project management software and carbon accounting systems, are discussed to support effective goal setting in various contexts.

Learning outcomes
By the end of the module, you should be able to:

  • Understand the basics of Science Based Targets.
  • Understand the basics of nature-based solutions.
  • Understand goal setting terms and phrases.
  • Be able to translate values and strategies into goals.
  • Be able to define and set ambitious and realistic goals.
  • Understand what SMART Goals (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant and Time-Bound) are and the pros and cons of working with them.
  • Understand reverse goal setting.
  • Be familiar with tools and measures to help.


Position and pathway
This module includes an optional online badge exam (micro-credential). Successful completion of the assessment contributes towards CEP’s Certified Professional in Energy and Certified Professional in Carbon qualifications.

Delivery mode
The module is delivered through twelve (12) short video lessons, supported by five (5) progression quizzes and one (1) final completion quiz. Progression quizzes act as checkpoints and must be successfully completed before learners can move to the next lesson.

Time commitment
The module comprises twelve (12) lessons and approximately four (4) hours of total video content. Learners will also complete five (5) short progression quizzes, each taking around five (5) minutes.

Digital certificate
A digital certificate is issued upon achieving a minimum pass mark of 75%, recognising successful completion and understanding of the module. Please note that this certificate is separate from the associated professional certification.
