At Engineering New Zealand, we believe inspiring the next generation of engineers is crucial. We're dedicated to promoting the profession through various programmes that show how exciting the world of engineering can be.
Engineers are in demand in New Zealand. The Government has a goal to increase the number of engineering graduates by 500 annually. To get more graduates, Engineering New Zealand coordinates the Week of Engineering to highlight the creativity and diversity of the profession.
Running annually since Beca started it in 2016, the Week of Engineering is a 7-day showcase of amazing engineering feats. We host a range of events that show kids, teenagers, and anyone with a curious mind how engineering transforms the world.
Week of Engineering 2017: 31 July – 5 August
Dream Big Film
Narrated by Academy Award® winner Jeff Bridges, Dream Big: Engineering Our World is a first of its kind film that will transform how we think about engineering. From the Great Wall of China and the world’s tallest buildings, to underwater robots, solar cars and smart, sustainable cities, Dream Big celebrates the human ingenuity behind engineering marvels big and small, and reveals the heart that drives engineers to create better lives for people around the world.
The Engineering Expo is a free event held in Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch. It serves as a showcase for the best of engineering – from robots and machines, to interactive displays, and design and build competitions. The Expo is a chance to indulge your curiosity, get you thinking creatively and explore the fascinating world of engineering. Engage in real-world projects, interactive activities, displays including virtual reality, drone technology and more. It's a chance for anyone to see innovative engineering up close and personal!
The school programme gives year 11 –13 students the opportunity to go on field trips to partnering engineering firms or on tours of local engineering sites. During the visit, students get to see what it’s like to work as an engineer.
Want to get involved?
The Week of Engineering is a great way to promote the profession. In 2017 we had 5,000 people through the Expos, 2,000 people watched the Dream Big film, and 1,700 students experienced a school programme. You can help us bring engineering to life by supporting the next Week of Engineering in the following ways:
Become a partner
As a partner, you’ll help us cover the costs to bring engineering events to Kiwis across the country. You’ll help us pay for venues, marketing material, and advertising. In return, your contribution will be publicly recognised on our Week of Engineering website, and in the media.
Have an Engineering Expo stand
You can run a stand at the Engineering Expo to promote your brand and the profession. With full creative reign, you can create a stand that is interactive and engages with people from all ages to showcase your business, and the incredible things that engineers do.
Run a school programme
You can create a school programme in your area. Students can visit your office or site and learn more about engineering through a fun activity. We can help you plan and organise the activity, and connect you with local schools.
