There aren’t many more stressful occupations than being an engineer. What we do is often very complex. We’re responsible for the impact of our decisions on other people’s quality of life and physical safety. We’re often asked to work to tough deadlines.

Feeling stressed is natural for an engineer. Sometimes we deal with it as a matter of course. But other times we need to acknowledge that we need help.

Having positive mental health doesn’t necessarily mean being free from problems. Everyone has times where they feel stressed, anxious, sad or worried. However when these feelings don’t go away, and when they start to impact your daily life, it might be time to recognise the need for intervention.

Maintaining positive mental health throughout your life means that if the worst happens you’re able to bounce back. Acknowledging a mental health issue isn’t a sign of weakness it’s an act of strength, a positive step towards regaining and maintaining a sense of control in life.
