Founded in 1889, the Institute of Marine Engineering, Science and Technology (IMarEST) is a registered charity and the international professional body and learned society for all marine professionals in over 120 countries. It is the largest marine organisation of its kind and the first Institute to bring together over 12,500 marine engineers, scientists and technologists into one international multi-disciplinary professional body.
What does the IMarEST do?
- Enhances the professional development of marine engineers, scientists and technologists at all stages of their careers, from student members through to Fellows.
- Enables marine professionals to engage on relevant topics, share knowledge and drive change through 50 international branches and multidisciplinary special interest groups.
- Provides learning and technical resources to support and enable its global network of trusted professionals to make a positive impact to society and the environment.
- Works with some of the most influential corporate partners in the marine sector, delivering people development and sector leadership.
- Holds formal recognition across a range of inter-governmental bodies, including the International Maritime Organization (IMO), to facilitate member expertise and contribute impartial advice, helping to shape the development of vital regulations and policies within the marine industry.
- Supports academic institutions by accrediting higher-learning courses, as well as recognising an organisation's training courses or events.
Membership
Professionals can apply for different membership grades along with professional registration. Member skills, experience and competence informs the level of professional registration they can achieve, with Chartered status being the highest.
