The Lower and Upper Karori dams were completed in 1878 and 1908 respectively, tapping into the waters of the Kaiwharawhara stream to provide water for the growing city of Wellington. When they were decommissioned in the 1990s the valley containing the stream was turned into the world’s first fully-fenced urban ecosanctuary, a restoration and conservation project now called Zealandia.
The group will assemble at the Zealandia sanctuary reception at 9.30am for morning tea at the Rata Café. Afterwards there will be a guided tour to look at both dams. The tour will finish at around 12.30pm. Families are welcome to stay at Zealandia for the rest of the day. Feel free to bring a picnic or have lunch at the Rata Café. Please make sure you register all family members who will be attending as we do have a maximum limit for the tour.
Please check the weather forecast on the day and dress accordingly.
Adult tickets are $10, children 12 years and under are free of charge.
