A solid specification prevents misunderstanding resulting in bad engineering. This seminar introduces best practice principles for developing and writing clear specifications that will properly communicate technical requirements. Aimed at designers, consultants and clients, it covers the fundamentals of formulating specifications for engineered systems, products and components, as well as software.

All engineering work eventually culminates in the development of a specification that has to clearly communicate the technical requirements of the project.  The specification, together with terms of contract and the project plan make out the three pillars of good engineering task execution.

This workshop presents an overview of best practice specification development and writing principles so that engineers and designers (hardware and software) can communicate technical requirements in a clear, unambiguous and structured manner.

While the workshop will present specification development from a general engineering practice perspective, it will be relevant for: council engineers, development engineers, consulting engineers, product  or sofware developers, manufacturing, and also procurement officials.

Piet Beukman

Piet is currently Director of the Master of Engineering Management programme and a former director of the Master of Business Administration (MBA) at the University of Canterbury. Piet mentors CEOs, consults with businesses and he also delivers training workshops.

He has presented numerous short courses and custom in-house workshops for local and international organisations including technology companies, district and city councils, electricity companies, infrastructure companies, government departments, and sports organisations.

Piet has developed a unique training style that combines underlying theory, practical examples and case studies into an integrated programme. He believes that learning should take place in a relaxed and friendly environment and that underlying principles should be taught first, before specifics, applications or tools are addressed. Participants therefore gain a thinking framework that can be readily remembered and applied over a wide spectrum in the workplace
