History of EPB tunnelling in New Zealand -
New Zealand has a proud history of tunnelling with over 80 tunnels constructed since 1840. Earth pressure balance machines were first used in Japan in the 1970’s, however the international use accelerated following the use on the Thames Water Ring Main in early 1990’s. EPB TBM’s were first used in New Zealand on Project Hobson with the machine launched in June 2008. Since then, over 35 km’s of EPB tunnelling has been completed in Auckland with a size range of 3.4m up to 14.5m. EPB tunnels have been constructed for stormwater, wastewater, rail and road applications.
This presentation will cover the 5 projects that have used EPB tunnelling to date and will cover the lessons learnt on each project that have contributed to EPB tunnelling becoming a reliable tunnelling method with high cost certainty.
